What are the cost's associated with hiring a private investigator?

by Keith R. Dinkins on 08/19/14

When you are in the market looking to retain the services of a  private investigator, the first question most people ask is, "What is it going to cost?" Here are a few things that you should expect.

You, the client, should be asked to sign a contract or an investigative agreement. This is for your  protection as well as that of the private investigator. Take your time and thoroughly review the contract.  The contract will or should clearly state what type of investigation the private investigator is conducting on your behalf (i.e., infidelity, fraud, etc.).

The contract should specifically detail the fees and retainer that you the client will be expected to pay. Most private investigators will require a retainer fee up front. Retainer fees can range anywhere from $500.00 to $1,500.00 or higher. The retainer fees are based on the type of investigation your are requesting. Most private investigators charge an hourly rate. These hourly rates can range anywhere from $50.00 to $75.00 per hour. The rates also could be higher in different geographical locations. The hourly rate is billed against the retainer fee which the client pays. Additional fees to expect are mileage fees, and any additional expenses that the investigator encounters during the course of the investigation such as travel expenses, video tapes, photographs, etc.

These are the standard expenses that an individual will encounter when retaining a private investigator. Hopefully, this information will be beneficial to you when you do need the services of a private investigator.
